Are Day and Night blinds any good?
Posted on 12 August 2024 by Phil Coleman
Are day and night blinds any good? is a question I was asked earlier today and for that particular customer and that particular house they were no good and we found a better solution that did exactly what they needed.
Day and night blinds operate in a very similar to traditional roller blinds. You simply move the blind up and down using the chain or remote control.
The difference is your ability to control the light. Traditional roller blinds are either up or down, whilst day and night blinds have voile panels in the fabric to allow extra light in and still have a good level of privacy.
Are day and night blinds any good?.... as blackout blinds?
This is a really simple answer and that is no. Day and night blinds work with a double layer of fabric and when your blind is in the closed position there is a gap between the 2 fabric which will allow light in on those sunny mornings.
Are day and night blinds any good?.... for kitchens and bathrooms?
The answer to this one is again not really. Most fabrics are made from polyester so can cope well with moist conditions. The voile section of the fabric is fragile and difficult to keep clean should it get splashed or wet. If you want a blind that lasts then there are better options.
Are day and night blinds any good? .... for privacy.
Day and night blinds are excellent for privacy. When the blinds are fully closed you will have total privacy, but you also have the added advantage of the voile section in the fabric that still means you get a good level of privacy whilst allowing more light into your home.
The picture above is a day and night blind with the voile panels lined up to allow the extra light in.
The same blind part way down in the closed position. When the blind is all the way down and in this position you will have total privacy.
Are day and night blinds any good? .... on a budget.
If you are on a tight budget then day and night blinds might not be the best option. The blinds are made with double the amount of fabric compared to a traditional roller blind making them more expensive.
Roller blinds, Vertical blinds and venetian blinds would all be a more cost effective solution.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Can people see in with Day and Night Blinds?
When the blind is fully closed you will have total privacy. When you line the voile panels up it will allow more light in with a view similar to looking through frosted glass. You are more likely to see movement through the voile at night or in the winter when it is dark outside and the lights are on in your home.
2. Why are Day and Night Blinds so expensive?
Day and Night Blinds require double the amount of fabric compared to a traditional roller blind making them a much more expensive option.
3. Can you fully open Day and Night Blinds?
Yes, They operate in a very similar way to a traditional roller blind. You can have the blind all the way up and out of the way. All the way down for total privacy and the great thing about Day and Night Blinds is you have a third option that allows more light in whilst keeping a good level of privacy.
4. Do Day and Night Blinds keep the cold out?
Yes they do. The blinds will act as an insulation barrier when fully closed keeping more heat inside your home in the winter months. How you use the blinds is really important. When the sun goes down keep your blinds fully closed until the morning, this will help keep as much heat as possible inside your home.
